For the insertion of a linked reference footnote: the following is placed at the insertion point of citation:

"... The centre gate consists of handsome iron scroll work."<ref>The Isle of Wight County Press, 6 July 1918</ref>

This is what is produced (note that the reference numbers in blue are automatically generated):
