Kaphan and [[Vudi]] lived together in the late 1970s and played in a traditional country band called Curtis Bunch & The Wild Bunch, and later joined [[Vudi]] in [[Farmers]] for a brief period. Vudi introduced Kaphan to [[Mark Eitzel]] and he agreed to play pedal steel guitar on the band's 1988 album ''[[California]]'' and 1989's ''[[United Kingdom]]'', and became a full-time member of the band by 1991's ''[[Everclear]]'', in which Kaphan recorded, mixed and produced a great deal.
