Kaphan and Vudi lived together in the late 1970s and played in a traditional country band called Curtis Bunch & The Wild Bunch, and later joined Vudi in Farmers for a brief period. Vudi introduced Kaphan to Mark Eitzel and he agreed to play pedal steel guitar on the band's 1988 album California and 1989's United Kingdom, and became a full-time member of the band by 1991's Everclear, in which Kaphan recorded, mixed and produced a great deal. Kaphan went on to play with the band through their 1994 San Francisco album. His last show with the band was on April 27, 1994.
