"Miracle On 8th Street" is the first song on American Music Club's 1991 album, Everclear. It was first recorded in 1989 during the aborted Everclear sessions, under the working title of "Brandy Into Beer".[1]

In 1989 Eitzel told Unhinged, "Here - 'We'll waste a thousand years sitting round the kitchen table/Watching the brandy turn into beer/And we can't get out even though we're able'. Stupid line, but there really was a night out when we started drinking brandy and then we got the beer out and drank all that up..."[2] In 2015, Eitzel said, "You know I was playing off the movie Miracle On 34th Street, and it was sort of an answer to that movie. But I had these friends, and there was always a party on 8th Street. I thought a lot about cinema and movies in my songwriting. I thought of characters and actors. Robert DeNiro was a huge influence. Raging Bull, all of those Scorsese movies he was in."[3]

Lyrics

C'mon let's waste another thousand years
Sitting around your kitchen table
We'll turn the brandy into beer
Later they'll say, "What a miracle"

You say all you need is a right position
'Cause nothing in this world helps you to see
You say that you never do it
Unless someone gives it to you for free

You say I never listen to you
Well you're right about that
But I thought that I love you
More than that

I know you're strong enough to live
In a world where all the magic's gone
I watch your hands tremble, you reach for another sip
Now all your luck is gone

Look at the moon, ain't it pretty at night
Don't look away - give it a chance for once
In it's own way it's just alive as any of us
In any way it's where you face

You say I never listen to you
Well you're right about that
But I thought that I love you
More than that
