"Rise" is the 2nd song on American Music Club's 1991 album, Everclear, and the first single released by the band. The single was released on Alias Records in the US, while Virgin France released Why Won't You Stay with the same artwork and track list and adding the album version of "Crabwalk".
In 2015 Eitzel told Aquarium Drunkard, "'Rise' was about someone who was dying of AIDS, a man, and I was sort of a primary caregiver for him. He was always picking on me, always on my ass because I didn’t know how to do the laundry for him. But yeah, that was for him. It had a simple theme – let’s not die. But the only rub was playing it live – it’s one of those songs where you’re trying to find the key and the emotion, and you have the loudest drummer in the world behind you. It can feel kind of dumb. As far as the writing, I just reflected the world as I saw it. There was a time, it took me years to get over it, when I saw a few of my close friends die, maybe within a year of each other. They died of drug overdoses, and then AIDS came. So for me it wasn’t quite survivor guilt, but maybe PTSD."[1]
Lyrics
The things you love don't give us too much hope
When you've lost your appetite and you're sick and tired
Maybe what you need is some food for your eyes
To make them rise
Don't tell me how to tell the truth
You're like a store that only sells guns and knives
Tell me how to make something beautiful
Flash before your eyes
Let them make you rise
It only costs a buck for three tries
Though money never buys enough of anything
And I'm a moving target trying to shake some lead
From your eyes
Let them make you rise
